Ford Field officially opened in 2002 after several years of construction. The stadium was built to replace the Pontiac Silverdome as the home of the Detroit Lions. The project cost hundreds of millions of dollars and became one of the biggest developments in downtown Detroit at the time. One unique feature is that part of an old warehouse was incorporated into the stadium structure. That historic building now forms part of the seating and suite area. The design blends modern sports architecture with historic brick construction. Since opening, the stadium has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Detroit sports.
