Why is it called Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium?

The stadium name honors legendary Texas Longhorns coach Darrell K Royal. Royal coached the team from 1957 to 1976 and led Texas to three national championships. In 1996 the university added his name to the stadium to recognize his impact on the program. The “Memorial” part of the name comes from the stadium’s original dedication. It was built to honor Texans who served and died in World War I. Over time the name evolved from War Memorial Stadium to Texas Memorial Stadium. Today the full name reflects both the memorial tradition and the legacy of Coach Royal.
