Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier coined the name because he wanted the stadium to feel like a tough, uncomfortable place for visiting teams. The idea was that Gators thrive in a swamp, while opponents struggle in the hot and humid environment. The design of the stadium also traps crowd noise and heat, making games feel intense and loud. Because of that reputation, many college football fans see a game at The Swamp as a must-do experience.
