Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is the home football stadium of the Florida Gators and sits right on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. It first opened in 1930 and has grown over the decades into one of the biggest and most famous college football venues in the country. Fans and media almost always call it “The Swamp,” which became the stadium’s nickname in the early 1990s. Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier coined the name because he wanted the stadium to feel like a tough, uncomfortable place for visiting teams. The idea was that Gators thrive in a swamp, while opponents struggle in the hot and humid environment. The design of the stadium also traps crowd noise and heat, making games feel intense and loud. Because of that reputation, many college football fans see a game at The Swamp as a must-do experience.
