Ben Hill Griffin Stadium currently holds about 88,548 fans, making it one of the largest college football stadiums in the United States. When it first opened in 1930, it held only around 22,000 people before several expansions dramatically increased the size. Over the decades the university added new upper decks, end zones, and modern seating areas to accommodate growing crowds. At its largest events, attendance has even topped 90,000 people packed into the stadium. The steep seating design places fans close to the field, which helps create an incredibly loud environment. Because of its size, the stadium is the largest sports venue in the state of Florida. Future renovation plans may slightly reduce capacity in order to add more modern seating and fan amenities.
