The stadium is named after two important figures in Auburn football history: Ralph “Shug” Jordan and Clifford Leroy Hare. Shug Jordan was Auburn’s all-time winningest head football coach and helped shape the program’s national reputation. Cliff Hare was a member of Auburn’s first football team and later became a respected university professor and athletics supporter. The stadium originally opened as Auburn Stadium before being renamed Cliff Hare Stadium in 1949. In 1973, the name was changed again to Jordan-Hare Stadium to honor both men together. Their contributions to Auburn athletics and education made them key figures in the school’s sports history. Today their names remain permanently connected to one of college football’s most famous venues.
