One of the most famous traditions at Clemson Memorial Stadium is the team running down “The Hill” before games. Players gather at the top of the hill and touch a stone known as Howard’s Rock before sprinting onto the field. The rock was brought from Death Valley in California and placed in the stadium by coach Frank Howard in the 1960s. Howard once told players not to touch the rock unless they were ready to give 110 percent on the field. The dramatic run down the hill toward the field has become one of the most exciting entrances in college football. Fans pack the stadium early to watch the tradition happen before kickoff. The moment symbolizes Clemson pride and school spirit.
