The nickname “Death Valley” comes from the reputation the stadium built as an extremely difficult place for visiting teams to win. In the late 1940s, a coach from Presbyterian College reportedly said taking his team to Clemson was like going into Death Valley because they never won there. Clemson coach Frank Howard later began using the nickname regularly, and it quickly stuck with fans and media. The name also fits the stadium’s geography because the field sits down in a valley surrounded by steep seating areas. Over time the nickname became part of Clemson’s identity and branding. Today the phrase “Welcome to Death Valley” is often seen around the stadium and during broadcasts. The intimidating name reflects the loud crowd and tough home-field advantage Clemson enjoys.
