When was Kinnick Stadium built?

Kinnick Stadium was constructed in 1929 after the University of Iowa decided to replace its older football venue. The original stadium was built in less than a year with construction running almost around the clock. Workers used early construction equipment along with horses and mules to help move materials during the process. The first football game played there took place on October 5, 1929, when Iowa defeated Monmouth. At the time the stadium held about 53,000 spectators, which was large for that era. Over the decades several renovations expanded the seating and modernized the facility. Despite all those upgrades, the stadium still keeps much of its historic structure from the 1920s.
