How do you get to the Great Salt Lake from Salt Lake City?

Getting to the Great Salt Lake from downtown Salt Lake City is pretty easy by car, and it usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and which part of the lake you’re heading for. Highway I‑80 runs right along the south end of the lake, so you can jump on that and follow signs to public beaches or lookout points. There are multiple access points like Antelope Island State Park if you want more developed trails and picnic spots. Some local tours and shuttles head out there too, but most visitors drive themselves. Be sure to check a map before you go because the shoreline is huge and not all areas are clearly signed. Once you’re out near the lake, you’ll start to see big salt flats and wide open views that feel totally different from the city. Packing water, snacks, and sun protection makes the scenic drive and stopover way more fun.
