Why is the Great Salt Lake shrinking?

The Great Salt Lake has been shrinking over the past few decades mainly because of less water flowing in and more water being used by cities and farms. Drought conditions and climate change are also big reasons the lake’s water levels have dropped. When less snow melts from the mountains into the rivers, there’s simply less inflow to keep the lake full. People divert rivers and streams to supply irrigation and growing cities, which means even less water reaches the lake. As a result, large areas of the lake bed get exposed, creating dust and ecological stress. Scientists and local leaders have been trying to raise awareness and push for water conservation to protect the lake. Still, the shrinking trend is a real concern for wildlife, air quality, and the economy around the area.
