The name “Leech Lake” often surprises people, but it has a historical origin. It comes from the French word “lac du sangsue,” which means “lake of the leeches.” Early explorers and traders noticed the presence of leeches in the area. Over time, the name stuck and was translated into English. Despite the name, the lake doesn’t have unusually high numbers of leeches today. Most visitors don’t encounter them at all while swimming or boating. It’s more of a historical name than something to worry about now.
