Abkhazia is a region on the eastern coast of the Black Sea in the South Caucasus. It lies along the northwestern part of Georgia and borders Russia to the north. The region has its own government and institutions, but its political status remains disputed internationally. Most countries consider Abkhazia part of Georgia, while a smaller number recognize it as independent. Its capital city is Sukhum, often called Sukhum by locals and visitors. The area is known for its mountains, beaches, forests, and subtropical climate. Because of its unique status, Abkhazia is often discussed in both travel and political news.
