Abkhazia has a humid subtropical climate along much of its Black Sea coast. Summers are typically warm and sunny, making beach tourism popular during the season. Winters near the coast are usually mild compared with many other parts of the Caucasus region. Higher elevations in the mountains experience cooler temperatures and significant snowfall. The combination of sea air, mountains, and abundant rainfall creates lush green landscapes throughout much of the region. Citrus fruits, tea, and other subtropical plants grow well in some areas. Many visitors consider spring and early autumn especially pleasant because temperatures are comfortable and crowds are smaller.
