Members of Parliament, often called MPs, are elected during federal elections. Canada is divided into electoral districts called ridings. Each riding elects one MP to represent them in the House of Commons. People vote for their preferred candidate, usually representing a political party. The party with the most seats usually forms the government. Elections are typically held every few years, but they can happen earlier in some situations. This system keeps the government directly connected to voters across the country.
