Becharof Lake is one of the best places in Alaska to see wild animals in their natural habitat. Brown bears are especially common during the salmon spawning season when they gather along rivers and streams. Visitors may also spot moose, wolves, foxes, wolverines, river otters, and beavers throughout the refuge. The area is famous for its birdlife, including bald eagles, tundra swans, loons, ducks, geese, and many migratory species. Wildlife viewing is often best during the summer months when animals are most active. Bringing binoculars and a good camera can make the experience even more memorable. Visitors should always keep a safe distance from wildlife and follow bear safety guidelines.
