Camping is allowed in many parts of the Becharof National Wildlife Refuge, including areas around the lake, but visitors need to be fully prepared for wilderness conditions. There are very few developed facilities, so most campers practice backcountry camping and pack in everything they need. Some guided lodges and remote fishing camps also operate near the lake during the summer season. Weather can change quickly, bringing rain, wind, and cold temperatures even in July. Proper camping gear, food storage, and bear-resistant containers are strongly recommended. Since cell phone coverage is extremely limited, many visitors carry satellite communication devices for safety. Careful planning helps ensure a safe and enjoyable wilderness experience.
