Houghton County is located on the northern tip of Michigan. The county seat of Houghton County is Houghton. The overall area of the county is about 1,502 square miles. Founded in 1845 from parts of Marquette County and Ontonagon County, today Houghton County counts over 37 thousand inhabitants. The county is named after Dr. Douglass Houghton (1809-1845), first state geologist of Michigan.
