Gaza has a long and complex history, dating back thousands of years. It has been ruled by Egyptians, Philistines, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Ottomans, and the British. After 1948, it came under Egyptian control, and following the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel occupied it. In 2005, Israel withdrew, but conflict and political division have continued since then.
