The Gaza Strip is a densely populated coastal area bordering Israel and Egypt. It’s home to over 2 million people in just 365 square kilometers. Ancient Gaza was a major trading hub on the route between Egypt and the Levant. The area has been ruled by Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and more. It was under Egyptian control from 1948 to 1967, and then occupied by Israel until 2005. Gaza is known for its resilient population despite ongoing conflict. The area includes ancient ruins, including a Byzantine church with stunning mosaics.
