How did Niagara Falls form?

Niagara Falls was formed approximately 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. As glaciers receded, water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment, creating the falls. Over millennia, the powerful flow of the Niagara River eroded the rock layers, slowly moving the falls upstream. The process of erosion continues today, although it’s been slowed by human engineering.
