What is Petra?

Petra is an ancient archaeological city located in southern Jordan, near the town of Wadi Musa. Carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs, Petra was once a thriving trading center and the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom around the 4th century BCE. It is nested between rugged desert canyons and mountains, making it both majestic and hidden from plain sight. Today, it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Middle East. Petra has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
