What led to the decline of Petra?

Petra began to decline after the Romans annexed Nabataea in 106 CE, shifting trade routes away from the city. Over time, natural disasters, including several major earthquakes, damaged its infrastructure. By the 7th century CE, Petra was largely abandoned and faded from prominence, though it remained known to local Bedouin tribes.
