“Big Ben” is actually the nickname for the Great Bell, not the tower. The clock tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012. The bell weighs over 13 tons and has a unique crack that gives it a distinct sound. Big Ben has rarely stopped ticking, even during bombings in WWII. Each of the four clock faces is over 7 meters in diameter. The clock mechanism is wound by hand three times a week. A penny is added or removed from the pendulum to regulate timekeeping. It's one of the most iconic symbols of London.
