The granite used for Mount Rushmore is over 1.6 billion years old.
The entire sculpture took 14 years to complete, from 1927 to 1941.
The original plan included full-body statues, but only the heads were finished.
Over 400 workers, including miners and sculptors, worked on the monument.
The faces are visible from up to 20 miles away on a clear day.
The monument was constructed using dynamite for 90% of the rock removal.
Gutzon Borglum also worked on Stone Mountain in Georgia.
Mount Rushmore is visited by over 2 million people every year.
