The Moai are giant monolithic statues carved by the Rapa Nui people between the 13th and 16th centuries. They were made from volcanic rock and stand as symbols of ancestral worship. Most Moai feature oversized heads, which make up about three-eighths of the statue's size. They are believed to represent important chiefs or ancestors who were deified after death. Around 900 Moai have been documented on the island. These statues remain one of the world's greatest archaeological mysteries.
