The two main languages spoken on Easter Island are Rapa Nui and Spanish. Rapa Nui is a Polynesian language that is closely related to Tahitian and Hawaiian. However, due to Chilean governance, Spanish is the dominant language today. Efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize the Rapa Nui language through schools and cultural programs. Many young islanders are bilingual, speaking both languages fluently. Language preservation is seen as vital to maintaining cultural identity.
