Several factors contributed to the decline of Easter Island’s society. Deforestation, caused partly by overuse of resources, made it difficult to build boats and sustain agriculture. Internal conflicts and wars between clans weakened the community. European contact brought new diseases that devastated the population. Slave raids from Peru in the 19th century further reduced numbers. By the late 1800s, the population was reduced to just a few hundred. These struggles shaped the island’s modern identity.
