What role did Hagia Sophia play in Ottoman times?

After the Ottomans captured Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Minarets were added, along with a mihrab and minbar for Islamic worship. It served as the city’s most important mosque for nearly 500 years. During this period, Islamic elements were incorporated while preserving much of the Christian architecture, creating a unique cultural fusion.
