The Dead Sea is named for its high salinity, which prevents most aquatic life from thriving in its waters. While some bacteria and microbial fungi can survive, fish and other common marine life cannot. The name has historical roots, appearing in ancient texts and religious scriptures. Its extreme environment has fascinated travelers and scholars for thousands of years. The surrounding desert and barren shores reinforce the "dead" imagery. Despite the name, the area is rich in minerals and natural resources.
