Crimea’s history spans thousands of years, from ancient Greek colonies and Scythian settlements to Tatar khanates and Ottoman rule. In the late 18th century, it was annexed by the Russian Empire under Catherine the Great. After World War II, it became part of the Soviet Union, and in 1954 it was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR. Following the collapse of the USSR, Crimea remained part of independent Ukraine until 2014, when Russia annexed it, a move not recognized by most of the international community. This complex history shapes its identity today.
