Crimea is politically disputed because Russia annexed the peninsula in 2014 after a controversial referendum. Ukraine and most of the international community do not recognize the annexation and consider Crimea part of Ukraine. Russia, however, administers the region and treats it as part of its territory. The dispute has led to sanctions, tensions between Russia and Western nations, and difficulties for Crimean residents. The situation remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical issues in Eastern Europe.
