How does Tower Bridge open?

Tower Bridge opens using a bascule system, where two large leaves or “arms” pivot upward to allow river traffic to pass. Originally, the bridge was powered by steam-driven hydraulics, but it has since been modernized to use an electro-hydraulic system. The opening process takes only about five minutes. Even today, the bridge still lifts several times a week for tall ships and vessels. The raising of Tower Bridge remains a spectacular sight for both Londoners and visitors.
