Tower Bridge was built to address the growing commercial development on London’s East End during the late 19th century. Increased traffic across the Thames required a new crossing, but traditional fixed bridges would have blocked river traffic. The solution was a movable bascule bridge that could open for ships. Tower Bridge allowed trade and commerce to continue while easing transportation between the two banks. It quickly became essential to the city’s infrastructure.
