Ellis Island opened as an immigration station on January 1, 1892.
The very first immigrant processed was a 15-year-old girl from Ireland named Annie Moore.
Nearly 40% of Americans today can trace at least one ancestor through Ellis Island.
At its peak, Ellis Island processed more than 11,000 immigrants in a single day.
The main building of Ellis Island is now a museum with over 1,000 oral histories from immigrants.
Ellis Island is partly in New York and partly in New Jersey due to a long-standing state boundary dispute.
The Ellis Island Wall of Honor lists over 700,000 immigrant names submitted by their descendants.
