Ellis Island closed as an immigration station in 1954 due to changes in U.S. immigration laws and procedures. By then, fewer immigrants were arriving, and modern processing methods made the facility unnecessary. After its closure, the buildings fell into disrepair until restoration began in the 1980s. In 1990, it reopened as the National Museum of Immigration. Its preservation allows future generations to learn about this important chapter of history.
