How many immigrants came through Ellis Island?

Between 1892 and 1954, about 12 million immigrants were processed at Ellis Island. These newcomers came from many parts of the world, with large groups arriving from Italy, Ireland, Germany, and Eastern Europe. At its busiest, Ellis Island processed over 5,000 people a day. Each arrival brought unique traditions, languages, and skills that helped shape American society. For many families, Ellis Island was the first step toward building a new life.
