Ellis Island is a historic immigration station located in New York Harbor, near the Statue of Liberty. From 1892 to 1954, it served as the main entry point for millions of immigrants coming to the United States. It is often called the "Gateway to America" because nearly 12 million people passed through its doors. Today, Ellis Island is preserved as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It represents both the challenges and hopes of immigration in American history.
