The original 1893 statue was a giant plaster-and-gold centerpiece at the World’s Columbian Exposition.
The current bronze replica is about 24 feet tall and was dedicated as a memorial in the 1910s.
Daniel Chester French, who designed the piece, also sculpted the Lincoln Memorial’s figure of Lincoln.
The statue stands on a Stony Creek granite pedestal and was part of broader efforts to preserve fair memory in Chicago parks.
Its location marks the historic Court of Honor and basin area that once dominated the Exposition landscape.
