How big is Lake Michigan compared to other Great Lakes?

Lake Michigan is huge — it’s the only Great Lake that sits entirely inside the United States. It’s the second-largest by volume and the third-largest by surface area. To give you an idea, it covers about 22,000 square miles, which makes it feel more like an ocean than a lake when you’re standing on the shore. The size is why you see waves, sandy beaches, and even lighthouses like you would along the coast. It’s basically the Midwest’s inland sea.
