Cape Verde is a group of volcanic islands off the west coast of Africa, about 400 miles from Senegal, and it feels like a mix of Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean all at once. The country is small but full of contrasts — dry desert landscapes on some islands, lush green valleys on others. What makes it stand out is the easygoing vibe, colorful culture, and a surprising level of safety and hospitality for travelers. English isn’t widely spoken, but people are friendly, and you’ll get by with Portuguese or Creole phrases. There’s also a lot of music everywhere, especially the soulful “morna,” which you’ll hear in bars and streets. Tourism here feels chill and less commercial than other beach destinations. Basically, it’s where you go to slow down and enjoy simple island life.
