Colombians are generally friendly and appreciate polite, warm greetings — a handshake or single cheek kiss is common depending on the region. Showing interest in local food, music, and history goes a long way and opens up conversations with locals. Don’t assume everyone speaks flawless English; trying a few Spanish phrases will be appreciated and often rewarded with better hospitality. Avoid heated political debates unless you know someone well, and be respectful when discussing sensitive historical topics. Tipping is common in restaurants and for guides, but do it modestly — check the bill first since service charges sometimes apply. Dress tends to be neat and presentable, especially in cities and restaurants. Most importantly, smile and be patient — Colombians value warmth and personal connection.
