How do I get to Botswana and get around once I’m there?

International flights land in Gaborone and Maun, with Maun serving as the gateway for most Okavango trips. Many visitors fly into Johannesburg and then take a regional flight—this is a common and efficient route. Inside the country, small aircraft and charter flights are widely used to hop between lodges and remote reserves. Roads connect major towns but some safari areas require 4x4s or guided transfers, especially in the wet season. Overland travel by self-drive is possible on well-maintained routes, but check insurance and permit rules first. Tours and lodges often include transfers, which removes the logistics headache and can be worth the extra cost. Plan transport around where you want to see—delta, Chobe, or Kalahari—because distances are real and infrastructure varies.
