Afghanistan uses the Afghan afghani, which is written as AFN. The afghani has gone through a lot of ups and downs, especially during the years of war and political change. You’ll see banknotes with images of local landmarks and historical figures. Most daily purchases are made in cash, and U.S. dollars are also accepted in some bigger cities like Kabul. People still call small amounts in “pul,” which are coins, but those aren’t used much anymore. The exchange rate moves a lot, so travelers usually change money at local money exchangers. Overall, the afghani reflects Afghanistan’s long and complex financial history.
