Angola’s currency is the Angolan kwanza, with the symbol AOA. It replaced the older “new kwanza” back in 1999 after some big economic reforms. The kwanza’s value can swing quite a bit because of inflation and oil price changes. People usually handle most things in cash, though card payments are slowly catching on. You’ll find colorful bills showing Angola’s culture and political leaders. Exchanging U.S. dollars is possible, but it’s best to do it at official banks or hotels. The kwanza is an important symbol of Angola’s growth after years of rebuilding its economy.
