The official language in Iceland is Icelandic. It’s one of the oldest living languages in Europe and has changed very little over the centuries. Icelanders are proud of their language, which has deep roots in Old Norse. English is widely spoken, especially among younger people and in tourist areas. Many Icelanders also understand Danish or other Scandinavian languages. Signs, menus, and guides are often bilingual, making travel easy. The Icelandic language is a strong symbol of the country’s history and independence.
