The official languages in Iraq are Arabic and Kurdish. Arabic is spoken throughout most of the country, while Kurdish is dominant in the northern Kurdish region. In addition, there are smaller communities that speak Turkmen, Assyrian, and Armenian. English is also taught in schools and used by many young people. Most Iraqis are bilingual and switch between languages depending on the situation. Signs in major cities often include both Arabic and Kurdish. The country’s language diversity reflects its rich cultural and ethnic heritage.
