The official languages in Ireland are Irish (Gaeilge) and English. English is the main language used in daily life, business, and media. Irish, a Celtic language, is taught in schools and spoken more widely in certain rural areas called Gaeltacht regions. Many signs and documents are bilingual, showing both English and Irish. Most Irish people are fluent in English but understand some Irish phrases too. Tourists will have no problem communicating in English anywhere. The Irish language is a treasured symbol of the nation’s culture and heritage.
