The official languages in Kiribati are English and Gilbertese (also known as I-Kiribati). Gilbertese is the language most people use in daily life, while English is taught in schools and used in government. Many locals are bilingual and can easily switch between the two. The Gilbertese language has a soft, melodic sound and reflects the island’s Polynesian roots. English-speaking visitors can usually communicate without much difficulty. In rural islands, however, English may be less common. The language blend gives Kiribati its charming and welcoming character.
