The official language in Liberia is English. It’s used in government, schools, and media throughout the country. However, most Liberians speak one of the many local languages, such as Kpelle, Bassa, or Grebo, in their daily lives. Liberian English has its own unique accent and expressions that can sound musical and warm. Many people are bilingual, using standard English in formal settings and local versions at home. Travelers will find communication fairly easy in most areas. The country’s language diversity reflects its mix of African and American heritage.
