The official languages in Madagascar are Malagasy and French. Malagasy is the main language spoken by nearly everyone across the island. It has several regional dialects, but the standard version is used in schools and media. French is also widely spoken, especially in cities and government offices. English is becoming more common in the tourism sector, though not everyone speaks it fluently. Many people are bilingual in Malagasy and French. The Malagasy language reflects the island’s blend of African and Southeast Asian roots.
